The Suffering at Birth

1. Birth is the origin of suffering, an ocean of grief, and a mountain of fear which seems immovable.
2. Birth is the collection of actions (karma), a mine of wrongdoing, and an ever new and cruel harassment by time.
3. Birth is the fruit of wrong knowledge, a lotus of greed, and a veil of Illusion without Knowledge (Jnana).
4. Birth is bondage for the individual being, the cause of death, and the cause of confusion and entanglement without reason.
5. Birth is the forgetting of happiness, a reservoir of worry, and an extensive expanse of passion.
6. Birth is the misfortune of living beings, the stamp of imagination, and the spell of the witch called attachment.
7. Birth is the deception of Illusion, the bravery of anger, and an obstacle in the way of liberation.
8. Birth is the assertion of individuality by living beings, the quality of ego, and is itself the forgetting of God.
9. Birth is the fondness for sense objects and the bonds of greed. Birth is like a cucumber that is being devoured by time.
10. Birth is itself difficult times, a false time, and a downfall into a heap of filth.
11. If one looks at the origin of the physical body, where birth takes place it is very dirty, being formed in the discharge of menstruation.
12. The body is a statue that is made from the discharge of menstruation. How can the body be considered pure when it is made from what is considered to be very dirty?
13. The discharge of menstruation becomes thickened and stabilizes, and it is that dirt which takes the form of the body.
14. Outwardly, the body looks magnificent, but inside it is like a sack of odorous filth and fluids that should not be opened.
15. While a garbage container becomes clean by washing the inside of it, the dirt and odor of the body, even if washed everyday, never becomes clean.
16. The body is made up of an erect bone skeleton that is wrapped in blood vessels and nerves, and the space inside the skin, which is filled to the brim with fat and flesh.
17. That which is unclean (ashuddha) cannot become clean (shuddha). The body is filled with that which is unclean (the word for blood is also ashuddha) as well as many afflictions and diseases residing inside it that cause sorrow.
18. The body is like a storehouse of filth, inside and outside it is covered with dirt. It is a bag containing foul smelling urine.
19. The intestines are full of worms, that looks like many small bags containing foul smelling things, and the skin covering over them looks very disgusting.
20. The head is considered the best part of the body, yet mucus runs from the nose and the ears and emits a foul smelling odor.
21. The eyes give out secretions, the nose is filled with accumulated dirt, and in the morning the mouth throws out dirty saliva.
22. From the face, saliva along with other dirty mucus and phlegm are spit out, and yet it is compared to a lotus, or said to be beautiful like the moon.
23. That the face is dirty, and the bowels are full of fecal matter can easily be seen. This is clearly evident in the world and does not require any proof.
24. Even if one fills the stomach with the best food, it is eliminated as feces or sometimes is vomited out. Even if one drinks pure Ganges water, it becomes urine.
25. Understand thus, that dirt, urine, and vomit (gastric fluids) make up the life of the body. The body grows because of these only. There is no doubt about this.
26. If there is no feces, urine, and vomit, then there is death. This is the same for everyone. Whether a king or a beggar, one cannot escape having feces in the abdomen.
27. If one tries to take these things out the body to try to keep it clean, it will die. Such is the arrangement of the body.
28. Such is the state of the body as seen in a healthy condition. My mind doubts that it should even be described when it is in a diseased condition.
29. Like being in a prison, the body suffers for nine months in the womb. All of the nine openings are closed, and there is no air.
30. The vomit and hellish juices percolate in the stomach and become heated up with the gastric fire. It's as if the bones and flesh are being boiled inside.
31. Without skin, the fetus moves around in the womb, and because of that the mother feels the ill effects of pregnancy. The bitter and hot food consumed by the mother makes the whole body of the child burn.
32. When the skin is developed, the fetus is like a bundled packet surrounded by feces in the abdomen of the mother, and it receives food in foul liquid form through the placental cord.
33. Drenched in the dirt of feces, urine, vomit, bile, with worms in the nose and mouth, the thoughts of the fetus are exceedingly agitated.
34. Like this, a living being is in a condition like being imprisoned, having fallen into a very cramped place. Moaning, he asks God to release him from there right away.
35. Oh! God, please release me from here. I shall do good for myself, and once I escape from this womb, I shall not come back here again.
36. Because of this suffering in the womb, such a vow is made. By then, the time of birth comes near and the mother begins screaming at the time of delivery.
37. There is flesh in the mouth and nose so the fetus is not able to breathe, and the head is completely blocked from coming out at the time of birth.
38. With the opening for the head closed off, the thoughts of the living being become frightened and be begins moving in agony, feeling suffocated.
39. The feeling of suffocation from not being able to breathe in or out makes the fetus very anxious. Not seeing the way out, he feels lost and restless.
40. The thoughts are very frightened and the fetus gets stuck in a horizontal position. With that, people say that an obstruction has occurred and that the fetus must be cut into pieces to get him out.
41. So, by cutting the fetus into pieces, they take it out. First the hands and legs are cut and removed. Then, whatever comes into their hands such as the face, the nose, and the abdomen, is all is cut up and removed.
42. In this way, the life force of the child is given up and the mother also gives up her body.
43. His own death has occurred, and his mother’s life is taken away as well. Such is the sorrow that is suffered in the womb.
44. However, but even if due to past good deeds the fetus finds its way to the vaginal opening, it may still get caught at the neck and shoulders.
45. Restricted in this way, the fetus is forcefully removed and taken out, and in this manner the life force goes out of the child.
46. When in the end the child loses his life force, this results in forgetfulness. With that, past memories and even the memory of oneself is forgotten.
47. In the womb the fetus says "I Am That, I Am That" (Soham, Soham). After coming out, he says "Who am I?" (Koham). Like this, he undergoes much suffering during the stay in the womb.
48. After having been afflicted by a lot of suffering and coming out of the womb with great effort, after a short time he forgets the suffering of that time in the womb.
49. Becoming devoid of knowledge and not remembering anything in his thoughts, delusion occurs through ignorance, and is considered to be happiness.
50. The body becomes affected by happiness and sorrow, and like this it gets caught in the web of Illusion. Let it be.
51. It is like this that the suffering in the womb happens to living beings. Therefore one should surrender to God.
52. One who is the devotee of God becomes liberated from birth. With the strength of Knowledge (Jnana) one becomes detached for all time.
53. Like this, the calamities of staying in the womb have been explained according to my ability. Listeners, remain alert, and pay attention to what is said next.
