Devotion Through Worship

1. Previously, I gave the explanation on the attributes of the fourth type of devotion. Now, be attentive and listen to the explanation of the fifth type of devotion.
2. The fifth type of devotion is "Devotion Through Worship." Worship means the worshipping of God with respect to what has been laid out in ancient scriptures.
3. Worship means that many types of seats should be prepared, instruments of worship used, decorative clothing and ornaments offered, and that mental worship and meditation on the forms of God should be done. This is known as the fifth type of devotion.
4. Worship can be of God, Brahman, fire, saints, sages, guests, those with great experience, and the Gayatri mantra. This is known as the fifth type of devotion.
5. Worship can be of idols made of metal, stones, clay, pictures, respected pious elders, and the gods of one's own household. This is known as the fifth type devotion.
6. Worship can be of various stones representing various gods, or stones that have come from some sacred place or river.
Note: Verses 7 to 13 of this sub-chapter give names of various incarnations and deities from Hindu mythology that are worshipped in different regions of India.
7. Bhairava, Bhagavati, Mallaaree, Munjyaa, Nrusiha, Banashankari, the cobra, coins of different varieties, and a group of five gods called Panchaayetna are worshipped.
8. The various idols of Ganesha, Sharada, Vithal, Ranganatha, Jagannaatha, dancing Shiva, Krishna, Hanuman and eagle vehicle of Lord Vishnu are worshipped.
9. The fish, tortoise and bear incarnations, Nrusiha, Vaamana, Bhargava, Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, and Hayagreeva, are all forms of gods that are worshipped.
10. The idols of Keshava, Narayana, Madhava, Govinda, Vishnu, Madasudana, Trivikrama, Vaamana, Shridhara, Rhishikesha and Padmanabha are all worshipped.
11. There are idols of Daamodara, Sankarshana, Vaasudeva, Pradyumna, Aniruddhava, Purushottama, Adhokshaja, Naarasiha, Achyuta, Janaardana, and Upendra that are worshipped.
12. There are many idols of Vishnu, Shiva, Jagadatma, Jagadeesha, Shiva/Shakti and others that are worshipped.
13. Ashvathanarayana, the Sun, Laxmi/Narayana, Trimallanarayana, Shreeharinarayana, Aadinaarayana, Vishnu reclining on the serpent, and Paramatma are all worshipped.
14. There are innumerable images and incarnations of God. If you look, you will see that there are plenty. Worship can be done to any of these. This is the fifth type of devotion.
15. Aside from these, there are many family duties and routines that are followed, and one should give their best performance to them.
16. One can worship various household gods and goddesses as per family traditions.
17. One should visit pilgrimage places and worship the god there. One should make offerings to God of many various things while worshipping.
18. Offer liquids like honey, milk, ghee, curds with sugar, as well as sandalwood paste, rice grains, flowers, perfumes, incense, lit oil lamps, and lamps burning with camphor.
19. Many types of good food, many fruits, varieties of betelnut leaves, money, ornaments, decorative clothes, and garlands of flowers should be offered.
20. Offerings of umbrellas, comfortable seats, canopies, huge flags with various symbols, small flags and banners, and music with cymbals, big drums and tabor.
21. Many celebrations should be made with musical instruments and there should be many groups of devotees gathering to sing with feelings of devotion towards God.
22. Water tanks, wells, lakes, temples with special ornaments on the tops, temple yards, beautiful structures, plants, and meeting halls should be offered.
23. Monasteries, marketplaces, dormitories, doorsteps of the temple, and resting houses should be decorated with many adornments and garlands in worship of God.
24. Many decorative curtains, decorative roofs, and clusters of jewels hanging nicely should be made. One should donate to temples for the care of the horses, elephants, and chariots.
25. Ornaments and ornamental boxes, money and money boxes, food vessels and many varieties of utensils for preparing and serving food should be given.
26. One should make offerings for the upkeep of forests, gardens, flower gardens, and the huts of the hermits. These are all ways of worshipping God.
27. Birds like parrots, chakrawaks, chakors, singing birds, peacocks, ducks, nightingales, cuckoos, and animals like deer and antelope should be offered to the temples.
28. Musk deer, cats, cows, buffaloes, bullocks, monkeys, as well as many other objects should be offered to the temples.
29. Body, speech, mind, heart, money, life, and indeed the entirety of your being, should be offered with devotional feelings as worship to God. This is what is known as devotion through worship.
30. Praising the Sadguru like this, one becomes one with God. This is known as "Devotion Through Worship," the fifth form of devotion.
31. If worship is not done in the ways described, then worship should be done with the mind. Doing mental worship is essential for realizing the Supreme God (Parameshwara).
32. God should be worshipped in the mind. Conceive that everything is in God, and is offered to God. Understand this to be the sign of worship in the mind.
33. Whatever one wants, should be imagined as God's, and offered to God. This is the way to worship in the mind.
