The Four Types of Gods

1. There is one thing that is unmoving and one that moving. Everything that has an appearance is entangled in the moving while That which is unmoving is still, remaining always just as it is.
2. The one who sees the unmoving using the power of discrimination is one among hundreds of thousands. Becoming fixed in the stillness of the unmoving, such a one is the unmoving itself.
3. Many people speak about That which is eternally unmoving, yet still run after the movement of Illusion. There are very few who escape from the wheel of the moving Illusion.
4. Movement is born in the movement of Illusion, and the movement grows only there in that movement. The entirety of life occurs within this movement.
5. The universe is entirely contained within this movement. Whatever happens takes place in movement. Who is there who gives up the moving and resides in the unmoving?
6. That which is moving never becomes still, and the unmoving never moves. People can understand this by using discrimination with regard to what is Eternal and what is ephemeral.
7. Because of some small doubts, something may be known, while some things are not fully known, something may be understood, while some things are not fully understood, and something may be realized, yet one's realization is not complete.
8. Doubt, guesswork, delusion and all efforts occur in the moving. There is no place for any of these in the unmoving. This secret must be understood.
9. All that is moving is Illusion, and whatever is illusory gets destroyed regardless of whether it is said to be small or very large.
10. The Illusion is spread out everywhere in the eightfold manifestation as many strange modifications and countless forms.
11. There are many things that have been created that undergo modifications, there are many beings, both small and large, and there are a great many objects and many different forms.
12. Whatever is prone to modification has been modified. The subtle has assumed material form, and that gross form has spread out and seems to be limitless.
13. Afterwards, many bodies were created and many names and titles were given to them through the use of language, and through words objects became recognizable.
14. Afterwards, many customs, traditions and practices were initiated, each one being different from the other. Then, all of the people started behaving according to their various common traditions and customs.
15. All bodies, small and large, were created out of the eightfold creation, and then they began behaving in their own ways.
16. Many opinions and sects were created, many false doctrines proliferated, and many types of rebellions and diversifications of opinion occurred.
17. People continued living according to the traditions to which they were accustomed as there was no one who could uplift them.
18. The whole Earth became chaotic with one person claiming to be more superior than the other. Nobody knew who was true and who was false.
19. The conduct of the people became varied and confused. People were abandoning their moral values for the sake of making a living, and everyone was putting on an outward show, puffed up with pride.
20. Gods became innumerable, and people professed the importance of their particular god. People made up fictitious stories about their gods and even the worship of spirits and ghosts became popular.
21. No one was able to identify or understand the true nature of God. There was no agreement among anybody, and no one listened to anyone else. Everywhere there was uncontrollable disagreement.
22. In this way, the capacity for people to think clearly became corrupted, and nobody was able to distinguish the Essence from non-essence, and no one was able to discern what was superior and what was inferior.
23. The sacred scriptures were put up for sale in the marketplace and there was confusion about the existence of many gods. People were making vows and worshipping for the gratification of desires.
24. Like this, everything became spoiled. The people were deprived of the knowledge of what is true and what is untrue, there was anarchy due to a lack of leadership.
25. Due to the confusion of so many various opinions, nobody respected anyone else. Everyone was caught up in their own opinion, thinking it to be superior.
26. When one takes pride in that which is not true, there is a downfall. Therefore, knowledgeable people search in earnest for the truth.
27. People say all kinds of things about God, but for a knowledgeable person the truth is as easy to recognize as one's own palm. Listen alertly now with discrimination.
28. Listen alertly to the description of the path that people should follow, and which God to worship, in order to gain actual experience.
29. There are many idols made out of earth, metal, stones and other things. It is common that most people worship an idol as God.
30. Some people listen to the stories and biographies about incarnations of gods, while some continuously do chanting and meditation as a form of worship.
31. Some consider the Inner-Self which functions as the Self in the universe to be God. This Self that is the all-knowing seer, or witness, is considered to be God.
32. And some worship That which is stainless and still. Never moving, and being one with That, they are Reality itself.
33. One type of God is seen in many idols. The second is the greatness of many incarnations. The third is the Inner-Self, and the fourth is changeless Brahman.
34. Like this, are the four types of gods in the universe which exist naturally. There is none other than these anywhere.
35. All consider God to be only One, and the witness of everything. However, one must understand the nature of the eightfold manifestation that is being witnessed.
36. Any god in creation is of the nature of creation and is illusory. Those with the greatest experience understand what is beyond the world by utilizing the power of discrimination.
37. One who meditates on That which is alone pure, becomes purity itself. Understand that one becomes what one worships.
38. Just as the Royal Swan can separate milk from water, those with the greatest experience are able to separate Essence from non-essence.
39. Oh dear one, please understand that the one who meditates on the moving will be of the nature of movement, and the one who worships the unmoving will become the unmoving itself.
40. Move along with the creation, but inwardly be identified with That which is eternally unmoving. Abide as the truth of your True Form inwardly, but outwardly behave like other people according to social norms.
