The Ayahuasca Ceremony

During the week we will be hosting 3 Ayahuasca ceremonies. The Ayahuasca medicine is a sacred plant brew that has been used by indigenous Amazonian cultures for thousands of years – primarily for healing, divination and spiritual awakening.

Working with Ayahuasca is an intense, profound, and almost always a highly transformative experience that can facilitate deep healing on all levels of your being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Ayahuasca is a doorway to inner worlds that allows us access to higher states of consciousness and the experience of spiritual awakening. To many people it reveals the multi-dimensional nature of reality and ourselves and it leads us back to who we truly are.

In practical terms, ayahuasca ceremony lasts about four to six hours and takes place at night in a dark room or purpose-built ceremonial building (maloka). Usually shamans initiate the gathering with each person — briefly describing their “intention” for the evening. (This could be something like, “I want to understand the source of my depression” or “I’m going through a career change and seek guidance for the path ahead,” and so on.)

Participants are offered a small cup of the brew, and a second cup later in the night (if more effect is sought). While effects vary from person to person, typically it takes 30 to 40 minutes for the effects to come on, with the first hour after that point being the most intense. This is then followed by waves of lower peaks that might last 30 to 40 minutes each. Many people feel sober during the “in-between” times and take advantage of these to use the bathroom or sip from their water bottle.

At the end of the ceremony the shaman formally closes the event with a prayer or incantation and people are allowed to drift off to sleep, or sit around talking, eat snacks or even play guitars softly. After everyone awakens in the morning the shaman reconvenes the group so each person can report briefly on their experience. People are advised to plan l
