Explanation of Death

1. The mundane worldly life is like a race, where the ending, which is death, cannot be postponed. From the very beginning of the physical body, death keeps track of its time, moment by moment.
2. Always living in the company of Time16, people cannot understand what is going to happen next. According to one’s actions, one may die in one’s own country or in a foreign land.
3. Upon the exhaustion of the remainder of one's accumulated actions, one has to meet with death without a moments delay.
4. Suddenly in life, the messengers of Time begin beating you continuously, and put you on the path of death.
5. When death arrives, no one can be protected. Sooner or later, death claims all.
6. When the powerful stick of death hits, even one who is strong, or a great powerful king, cannot remain.
7. Death does not say that someone is cruel, or that he is a fighter, or that he is a warrior on the battlefield.
8. Death does not say that he is hot tempered, or that he is adventurous, or that he is fierce, or that he is a big crook.
9. Death does not say that he is strong, he is wealthy, he is arrogant, or that he is endowed with all virtues.
10. Death does not acknowledge that anyone is famous, rich, or exceptionally brave.
11. Death does not say that someone is the ruler of the world, or that he is someone who knows tricks and magic.
12. Death does not say that he is the owner of horses, he is the owner of elephants, or that he is the leader of the people and a famous king.
13. Death does not say that he is superior among people, or he is a politician or one with a huge salary, or one who is paying salaries to others.
14. Death does not say that someone is a revenue authority, a businessman, or an evil king known in many places.
15. Death does not acknowledge that one is wearing religious marks, or that he is a trader, or that she is somebody’s wife, or she is a princess.
16. Death does not care about cause and effect, or that someone is of a high or low caste, or a priest doing good works.
17. Death does not say that anyone is a scholar, or prosperous, or highly learned among the people.
18. Death does not say that someone is clever, well respected, a vedic scholar, or of great character.
19. Death does not say that he is a narrator of mythology, or that he is a follower of the Vedas, or he is one who performs fire sacrifices, or he is an astrologer.
20. Death does not care that anyone takes care of the sacred flame, or is a listener to scriptures, or a chanter of incantations, or one who has "Complete Knowledge."
21. Death does not say that he is a scientist, or he is a knower of the Vedas, or that he is a knowledgeable person who knows everything.
22. Death does not say that anyone is a killer of a priest, or a killer of a cow, or that he has killed many women and children.
23. Death does not say that someone is an expert in classical music, or a knower of rhythms, or a knower of philosophy and a teacher.
24. Death does not say that he is a practitioner of yoga, or he is a renunciate, or that he knows how to deceive death.
25. Death does not care that someone is alert, or is accomplished, or a famous doctor, or an exorcist.
26. Death does not say that he is a hermit, he is an ascetic, or that he is one who is detached from his mind.
27. Death does not say that someone is a great sage, or a great poet, or one who is naked and in a state of total absorption (samadhi).
28. Death does not say that someone is an expert in a hatha yoga, or in raja yoga, or in a detached state forever.
29. Death does not say that he is a bachelor, or he is one with matted hair, or he is a yogi living without food.
30. Death does not say that anyone is a saint, or a spiritual leader who can disappear.
31. Death does not say that he is independent or dependent on others. It is death alone who consumes all living beings.
32. Some are almost on the pathway to death, some have reached half-way to death, and some have reached to the end of life in their old age.
33. Death does not say that he is a child or young, or one with good qualities, or one who is discerning, or very talkative.
34. Death does not say that he is a support to many, he is generous, or he is a beautiful and clever man.
35. Death does not say that he is a man with many merits, or he is a servant of God, or he is a man who has done special good deeds.
36. Now, let this talk be. Who can escape from death? Know with confidence that sooner or later, all must go down the path of death.
37. All beings coming from the four streams of life17 with the four types of speech18, comprising the 8.4 million species19 that have come to life, must eventually arrive at death.
38. If you try to run away from death in fear, death still does not go away. Death cannot be avoided, no matter what you try to do.
39. Death does not say that this one is in his own country, or he is a foreigner, or he is one who is always fasting.
40. Death does not say that he is a great person, or he is Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva, or that he is an incarnation of God.
41. The listeners should not be angry. Death is known to all. The living being who is born is bound to go down the path of death.
42. Do not have any doubt about this. Death is well known and clearly understood by all, large and small.
43. Even if one has doubt about it, death is still there. Everything that is born will die.
44. Realizing this, one should have fulfillment in life, and even continue to live after dying, in the form of fame.
45. All living beings large or small, will die. This is for sure. One should not suppose that there is any other answer about death than this.
46. Many who were wealthy are gone, many who were long lived are gone, and even those who were highly influential have all gone down the path of death.
47. Many who were brave are gone, many who have done clever deeds are gone, and many great warriors on the battlefield are gone.
48. Many who had great strength are gone, many who lived in great times are gone, and many kings and their great dynasties are gone.
49. Many who were supporters of others are gone, many great intellectual speakers are gone, and many great logical debaters are gone.
50. Many who were great oceans of knowledge are gone, many who were mountains of strength are gone, and even great gods of wealth have gone down the path of death.
51. Many men of great achievements are gone, many men of great adventure are gone, and many organizers and workers of great capacity are also all gone.
52. Many who have wielded weapons are gone, many who were benevolent are gone, and many protectors of religion of all kinds are gone.
53. Many men of great valor are gone, many with great fame are gone, and many ethical kings of great character are gone.
54. Many opinionated people are gone, many dedicated workers are gone, and many who were clever debaters of all topics are all gone.
55. Many groups of scholars are gone, many grammatical analysts are gone, and many extraordinary arguers with many different opinions are all gone.
56. Many great ascetics are gone, many detached renunciates are gone, and many thinkers who used keen discrimination have all gone down the path of death.
57. Many householders are gone, many men who played many different roles are gone, and many who have enjoyed many different hobbies are gone.
58. Many groups of priests, as well as many teachers are gone. So many beings have gone in so many ways. How much more can I say?
59. Now, let this talk be. Like this, one and all have gone. Only those remain who have gained Self-Knowledge and realized their "True Nature." (Swaroopa; having the form of, or being identical with Brahman).
