Signs of a Devotee

1. There are many people in the world, see them with discrimination. See correctly what is of this world and That which is not of the world.
2. For being successful in worldly life, keep the company of one who knows about worldly affairs. To be successful in the spiritual world, one must ask a true master, a Sadguru.
3. It's natural that one does not know what to ask the Sadguru. The aspirant should ask him two things.
4. What are these two things? Ask first, "Who is God?" and then "Who am I?" The explanation about these two things should be reflected upon again and again.
5. First, find out the principle God, and then the devotee must understand who one is oneself. Then the analysis of the five elements and the inner meaning of the four great vedic statements (Mahavakyas) must be understood.
6. The fruit of this is the recognition of the eternal unmoving stillness, and one finds out for oneself the answer to "Who am I?"
7. When considering the thought of Essence and what is not essential, it is seen that there is nothing that is permanent in this world. The one God that is the original cause of all must first be recognized.
8. The unmoving, the moving, and the inanimate are all the play of Illusion. Reality, being the source of all this, does not become diminished by any of it.
9. One should seek out the recognition of Parabrahman and explore the entirety of the three worlds by using the power of discrimination. One who skillfully investigates cuts down all that is illusory through thorough examination.
10. That which is untrue should be given up and the True should be accepted. One who investigates skillfully examines the entirety of Illusion and understands that all forms are illusory.
11. Illusion is made up of five elements, is false, and will disappear. The physical body, the universe, and the eightfold manifestation (Prakriti) are all perishable.
12. Whatever appears will be destroyed, whatever is born will perish, and whatever has been constructed will be demolished. That is the nature of Illusion.
13. Whatever expands will break, and whatever comes, goes away. One element is dissolved into another with the dissolution of creation.
14. The physical body that is currently being held will get destroyed. This is the direct experience of all. Without human beings how can there be any semen or procreation?
15. Without food how can seminal fluid exist, and if there are no plants how can any food exist? How can plants have life if the earth does not exist?
16. If water is absent, the earth cannot exist. Without light, water cannot exist. Without wind, light cannot exist. Understand like this.
17. Wind cannot exist without the Inner-Self. How can the Inner-Self exist without the arising of modification? How can there be any modification in the changeless? See how there is no change in the changeless.
18. There is no earth, water, light, wind, Inner-Self, or any other kind of modification in the Absolute Reality, Parabrahman.
19. Changelessness and attributelessness are the signs of Brahman. The eight-fold visible creation is completely destructible.
20. When we look, we understand that everything that appears perishes, and that even though it had an appearance it never really existed. With discrimination between the real and unreal one gains contentment.
21. By using the power of discrimination and with inquiry the mind comes to know what is Eternal and what is ephemeral, and because of this, the understanding as to what is True becomes firm.
22. The eternal God is attributeless. When one is inwardly convinced of this, it is a sign that one knows God. Next, one must come to know "Who am I?"
23. In order to know "Who am I?," one must search through all of the various elements of the body. Examining in this way, one comes to know that the feelings of "you" and "me" are only mental attitudes, or states of mind.
24. When the entire body is searched, the sense of "I-ness" cannot be found. The entire duality of "you" and "me" dissolves along with elements, one into another.
25. The search reveals that whatever is visible is going to disappear, one element dissolving into another. At that point, how can any duality remain? Only the original principle, Reality remains.
26. Understand the analysis of the five elements and the principle elements making up the body. Understand the inner meaning of the four Mahavakyas of the Vedas regarding Reality (Brahman), and surrender yourself with complete detachment.
27. When searching to the root of God and the devotee, it is seen that all is the attributeless Self alone, without any separate identity or label.
28. By using the power of discrimination the sense of a separate "I" disappears along with any sense of distinctions, and one recedes into the "stateless state" which is no-mind.
29. Knowledge (Jnana) has merged into Supreme Knowledge (Vijnana), and the object of mediation and the meditation have become one. The entirety of all that is seen to have cause and effect is discarded with clear seeing.
30. One escapes the cycle of birth and death, and all accumulated deeds disappear along with the sufferings associated with death.
31. All bondage is entirely broken. Through the utilization of discrimination and inquiry one attains liberation, and it is felt that one’s life has been entirely fulfilled.
32. Many doubts get cleared, and many dangers are warded off. With the Knowledge gained through the power of discrimination, many people become purified.
33. The servants of the saints who uplift the downtrodden also purify the world. This is experienced in the minds of many people.
