Worship of God With Attributes

1. The listener asked, "With Knowledge (Jnana), the visible becomes false, so why should one be required to worship God with attributes? What is to be gained by that? Please explain this to me.
2. If there is nothing more superior than Knowledge, then why is worship necessary? What do people attain with worship?
3. The Essence is attributeless (nirguna), and there the one with the attributes cannot be seen. What is the point of worshipping the one with attributes? Please explain this to me.
4. Everything is destructible, so what reason is there to worship what can be destroyed? Who wants to give up the real by worshipping the unreal?
5. Having the experience of Truth, why should one follow any discipline of worship? Why should one go to the trouble of giving up the Real?
6. The verified experience is that one attains liberation only in the attributeless (nirguna). What does the one with attributes (saguna) give? Please, explain this dear Master.
7. You are telling us that the one with attributes is destructible, and at the same time you are saying to do worship. Please tell me, for what reason should one engage in worship and singing praises (singing bhajans)?
8. Out of respect for you Master, I hesitate to ask this question, but this does not make sense and does not seem acceptable. Having attained that which is to be attained, why should one do any further spiritual practices?"
9. The speaker replied, "The listener, being confused, has asked these questions. Now, listen to the reply."
10. To follow the teachings of the Guru is the main sign of spiritual life. To go against the teachings, one will surely meet with adversity.
11. Therefore, one should respect the instructions of the Guru, and accept the worship of God with attributes. Again the listener asks, "What is the need for this?
12. What is to be considered as a reason for any obligation to worship? Has anyone become realized by it, or has God wiped out anyone's fate because of it?
13. Whatever is going to happen is not going to change. Of what use is it that people should worship? When thinking about this, one does not come to any reasonable conclusion.
14. The instructions of the Guru are clear and should be followed. Who can say that he is without authority? However, what is the benefit of this? Please, explain it to me."
15. Upon hearing this, the speaker asks, "Consider carefully, and tell me, what are the signs of Knowledge? After acquiring Knowledge, do you still need to do things in life, or not?
16. You still have to eat meals and drink water, and the activities of passing the feces and urine out of the body also cannot be avoided.
17. You continue to feel that those close to you should remain content, and you continue to recognize those who are close to you and those who are strangers. You do all of this, and yet you feel that you want to break away from worship. What type of Knowledge is this?
18. With the Knowledge born of discrimination, everything is known to be false, yet all of your activities are not given up, so why do you want to only give up the worship of God? Please tell me.
19. You act like a lowly person and bow down to your boss, and yet you do not want to believe in God. What kind of Knowledge is this?
20. Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma and others, are all obedient to God. If you, a mere human being do not worship Him, what does it matter?
21. Lord Rama is our lineage. Lord Rama is the Supreme Truth. He is the most powerful of the powerful, and he has liberated gods.
22. We are his servants. We have acquired Knowledge by serving him. If one does not have any devotional feelings for him, certainly there will be downfall.
23. The Guru tells about the Essence and the non-essential. How can what he says be called non-essential? How can the significance of this thought be conveyed to you? Only the wise understand.
24. Understand that those who contradict the minds of the great realized ones have lost a great fortune, like the luckless person who has been thrown down from holding a kingdom and the throne.
25. One who feels in his mind, "I am great" does not have the "Knowledge of Brahman." If one observes closely, it can be seen clearly seen that he is harboring pride for the body.
26. Understand that the one who claims to be realized, but who does not worship the Reality, and says that he will not worship, has the belief in body-identification remaining hidden inside.
27. If there is no worship, there is no Knowledge (Jnana). The pride for the body (body-identification) is unnecessarily being held. This is not conjecture, but what one actually experiences.
28. Do not be like this. You should begin worshipping Lord Rama. Only then should you speak of the Knowledge of Brahman which is eternal.
29. God with attributes is the one who causes the destruction of proud and malicious people, and who protects devotees. It is like this that the miracle is actually experienced.
30. With Lord Rama's blessings the experience comes that whatever wish you have in the mind gets fulfilled, and all obstacles get totally destroyed.
31. Knowledge is obtained by the worship of Lord Rama, and one's greatness is increased by the worship of Rama. Therefore, you should do the worship.
32. This is already the fact and verified experience, but you don’t feel it true. Therefore, you should prove it to yourself and realize it with actual experience.
33. Start every task by remembering Lord Rama, and it is immediately successful. Keep it in the mind that Rama is the real doer.
34. "The doer is Lord Rama, and not myself. There is no me." Like this, one offers everything including oneself to God with attributes, and only then does one become identified with the attributeless and actually become attributeless oneself.
35. If you say that you are the doer, then you will not get success. If you are looking for the true experience, then you can verify it immediately.
36. If you say, "I am the doer," you only become tired. By saying that Rama is the doer, one obtains success, fame and power.
37. If one has the feeling that "I am the doer," there is a feeling of being cut off from God. When one feels that God is the doer, then one feels blessed.
38. We exist only for a few days, but the existence of God is for a long time. We are known to but a few, but God is known in all the three worlds.
39. For this reason, many people respect the one who worships Rama. Even Brahma and the most prominent and respected people are eager to sing the praises of Rama.
40. If we who are devotees do not respect the worship of God with attributes because of our Knowledge, then there will be downfall because of the lack of devotion.
41. If because of pride one ignores the greatness of God, then it is he who suffers a loss. This is incorrect understanding and is not acceptable for the great ones.
42. With the worship of God one's body-identification is diminished, and with discrimination the sense of "I" does not remain. In this way, one becomes virtuous.
43. Everything is known to be false through the worship of Lord Rama. The visible world appearance is like a dream from the perspective of the Knowledgeable Ones (Jnanis).
44. Just as the occurrences of the events in a dream are unreal, the saints and sages know that the visible world is false.
45. Here, the listener raises an objection. "If it is false, then why does it still appear to us?" The answer to this is given in the next sub-chapter.
