The Greatness of the Inner-Self

1. At its root, the expanse of the universe is entirely made up of the five elements. The common thread in the universe is the Inner-Self that is the witness which sees all and is the form of Reality.
2. On one side is a crowded army of objects and on the other side is the King (Inner-Self) sitting high on his throne. Understand the meaning of this within.
3. The body is made up of bones and flesh. Understand that the King is the root of the visible world in the form of the original element.
4. Everything is made entirely of the five elements and functions only due to the power of the King that is the awareness beyond the elements.
5. Many have become free using the power of discrimination and have thereby come to be called incarnations of God (Avatars). The sage Manu and others became great in this way.
6. Those with expansive awareness are truly fortunate, while those with narrow awareness remain unfortunate.
7. Those who engage in intelligent activity and who courageously endure hardships become fortunate in no time.
8. Those who live like foolish people do not understand, while those who use the power of discrimination understand everything.
9. Greatness and the lack of greatness depend upon the intellect, but ordinary people do not understand this. They say that only those who are elders are great.
10. Even if a king is young, the elderly people must bow to him. One must understand how the wondrous power of discrimination works.
11. The knowledge of ordinary people is born of imagination and speculation, and accordingly they only follow the path of traditional customs.
12. But to whom should we say that their beliefs are not true? The common people do not understand, so how much should be said to them?
13. If a young person rises up and attains a higher state, people detest him. Therefore, an accomplished person should keep away from those people he had close association with before he gained understanding.
14. They do not understand the exact meaning of his statements, nor the significance of political correctness. They unnecessarily hold on to foolish notions.
15. One who does not understand correctly cannot say what is correct. Just because a person is younger, no one cares about his greatness.
16. If a young person says something wise, those who are older than him do not respect him, saying that he is young and not modest. Those who speak like this are not wise.
17. One who is older, but does not have any good qualities has no real authority. Authority that comes from actual experience is real greatness.
18. However, one should still show to respect their elders, and the elders should understand how to behave as an elder deserving of respect. If they do not understand this, they only suffer in their old age.
19. The Inner-Self is the true elder. When it is awakened, there is greatness. This is clearly evident but there are no words to explain it.
20. Therefore, wisdom must be gained with the power of discrimination. If wisdom is not gained through discrimination, one is not looked upon with respect in society.
21. If respect and credibility are lost, what has been accomplished with one's life? Such a person puts himself in a sorry state.
22. Men and women of all types abuse such a person saying that he has become sidetracked. Like this, such a person gets stuck in foolishness.
23. Nobody should live such a life. Make your life worthwhile. If this is not understood, then various texts should be consulted.
24. There is always demand for a wise person while one who is foolish is sent away. If one wants to be successful, he must first become wise.
25. Obtaining this wisdom, one must endure many difficult people, however, know that the best use of one's life is to gain wisdom.
26. Understand that the person who has become wise is respected by many people. How can there be anything lacking for such a person?
27. One who does not tend to one's own good in this life is considered to be one who commits suicide. There is no one who is more foolish than such a person.
28. Such a person undergoes many hardships in the life of a householder and ends up on the receiving end of many people's anger. One who is wise among people does not live like this.
29. I have spoken about this to you aspirants in a natural manner. If you agree with what has been said, happily take what has been offered. If you disagree, then leave it aside.
30. You listeners are extremely attentive and capable of giving your attention to the inconceivable, so you easily understand that what has been said just now is very ordinary and obvious.
