Explanation of Sleep

1. First we will offer homage to Primordial Being (Adipurusha), and then speak about the activities related to sleep, which comes easily but does not go away so easily.
2. When the body becomes affected by sleep it becomes lazy and starts yawning, and one cannot continue to sit upright.
3. Sometimes there is a sound produced by yawning, sometimes the sound of the fingers slipping away from each other can be heard, and sometimes the body droops from one side to the other.
4. For some, their eyes keep closing and opening, for some the eyes just close and they fall asleep, and some get startled and look around in all directions.
5. Some fall asleep suddenly and may even fall onto a musical instrument and break it without even being aware of it.
6. Some fall asleep sitting upright and start snoring, and some fall asleep on their back spread out leisurely.
7. Some sleep with their bodies curled up, some sleep on their sides, and some shift around on all sides.
8. Some move their hands, some swing their legs, and some clench their teeth making a grinding sound.
9. Some lose their clothes by moving around and may even begin to toss around naked on the floor. For some, their turbans get unraveled and open up, spreading out cloth and hair all over.
10. Some sleep in a disorderly position, some look like dead bodies, and some sleep with their mouths wide open with their teeth showing, looking like an awful ghost.
11. Some wake up crying out or talking, some move around in the dark, and some go to sleep on garbage.
12. Some get up and move pots from their places, some crawl around the ground moving their hands all around, and some get up and start walking around in different directions.
13. Some begin to scream in their sleep, some cry and sob, and some laugh out loud.
14. Some call out loudly, some get up and shout, and some just lie still in one place.
15. Some creep around from moment to moment, some scratch their heads, and some whimper softly.
16. Some have saliva dripping down from their mouth, some spit, and some urinate unknowingly.
17. Some fart loudly, some belch with a foul smell, and some cough loudly spraying phlegm.
18. Some pass stools in their sleep, some vomit, some cough and sneeze, and some ask for water in a sleepy voice.
19. Some get scared due to nightmares, some feel happy with pleasant dreams, and some fall into a deep sleep like a stone.
20. When dawn comes, some begin reading spiritual texts, some begin doing morning prayers, and some sing songs praising God.
21. Some awaken and immediately remember their idols of contemplation, some begin repeating mantra in solitude, and some recite passages that they have learned by heart.
22. Some start thinking about the various streams of knowledge, art, or music that they have learned, and some awaken singing popular songs.
23. When the sleep is over, people settle into the waking state and begin attending to their affairs, applying their intellect to what they are doing.
24. The knowledgeable person gives up the elements and has run away, beyond even the Turya state. Through self-surrender, he has become Brahman.
