Discrimination and Detachment

1. In the same way that if a great fortune is as good as useless if it comes into someone’s hands who does not know how to enjoy it, if one has detachment but does not utilize discrimination, that detachment is also useless.
2. There are many conflicts, pains and troubles in the family life that make one sorrowful. When one hears about this and sees for oneself, it brings about detachment.
3. There are many pressures, calamities, and problems in worldly life. So much so that one may even leave his family and go to another country.
4. He then becomes freed from his worries and escapes from his dependence on others, like a person who becomes relieved from the pains of disease.
5. But such a person should not then become lacking in self control and act in a destructive, corrupt, and mischievous manner, like some animal who roams around out of control.
6. If one is detached without proper discernment, then this lack of clear thinking will cause many problems, and both the worldly life and the spiritual life become useless.
7. If one does not have a worldly life or a spiritual life, then the entire life itself becomes meaningless. Without proper discrimination many problems are created in life.
8. In the case of someone who babbles on about Knowledge but is not free of desires, it is like someone who is locked up in prison while talking about his courageous accomplishments.
9. Knowledge without desirelessness gives rise to vain pride. Such a person becomes distressed and agitated because of greed and hypocrisy.
10. Such a person gets annoyed because of his selfishness like a dog that barks when it is tied down. Because of pride, he cannot bear to see others who have superior qualities or understanding.
11. Thus, having one without the other gives rise to unnecessary grief. Now, listen to the benefit of having the combination of both detachment and discrimination.
12. With discrimination one becomes liberated within. With desirelessness one breaks the bonds of worldly life. Such a yogi who is without attachment is free inwardly and outwardly.
13. With his mouth he speaks of Knowledge and all of his actions reflect that Knowledge accordingly. Seeing his example, even pure and virtuous people are amazed.
14. He has no interest in the three worlds. The state of desirelessness is fully established in him. There is no limit to his kind efforts and thoughtfulness.
15. Such a person enjoys devotional music and singing God's praises and telling stories of God.
16. He sets people on the right path and causes discrimination to arises within. The content of his speech is based in Self-experience.
17. On the righteous path he becomes one with the people in the world, and this pleases the Lord of the Universe. He understands propriety in various situations.
18. With desirelessness, he is disinterested in worldly life and is immersed in the actual experience of the Knowledge of Brahman. He practices appropriate rituals of worship and sings the praises of God in a virtuous way.
19. Desirelessness together with the discrimination is like this. Empty detachment is merely repression, and the word knowledge by itself is merely felt to be boring.
20. Therefore discrimination and desirelessness together should be understood to be the sign of great fortune. Ramdas says that the sages understand this properly.
