Explanation of Water

1. Now, the birth place of everyone that is the Life of all living beings, which is called the Water that is Lord Narayana (Apo-Narayana), will be described.
2. The earth is supported and surrounded by water that is the water of the seas and oceans, and the water in the clouds that flows down on the Earth as rain.
3. There are many rivers in many different countries that flow to meet the sea. Some are small, some are big, and some are sacred and revered beyond measure.
4. There are rivers that cascade down from the mountains finding their way down cliffs and through valleys, roaring with amazing intensity.
5. There are wells, ponds, lakes, and many reservoirs in various places that are filled to the brink with pure water.
6. There are many canals that have openings in the shape of a cow’s mouth, many small streams, and many brooks where water trickles out from the rocks.
7. There are many small pools, springs, wells, and places where water flows out through openings in mountains and rocks. There are a great many places where water is found on the Earth.
8. There are as many streams that rush down with deadly speed as there are mountains, and there are innumerable streams and brooks that bubble out of the ground.
9. It is not possible to describe all of the water on the Earth. There are countless numbers of fountains and aqueducts that hold and carry water.
10. There are many ponds, pools, small pits, and tanks that hold water in the mountains of different countries, and many other types of containers for water.
11. There are many famous pilgrimage places with water that are considered great and auspicious holy places, and which have been described by the writers of scriptures as having limitless grandeur.
12. There are many pilgrimage sites, some with pure water, some with cool water, and some with hot springs that are found at many places.
13. There is water that has medicinal value found in many plants, fruits, flowers, roots and bulbs.
14. There are many kinds of water that are found in many different places having various compositions and qualities. Some is salty, some is poisonous, and some is sweet like nectar.
15. There is sugarcane juice, fruit juices, different varieties of milk, honey, mercury, and the liquids derived from the processing of sugar.
16. The shimmering brilliance of pearls, of many dazzling jewels, and of weapons made from metal is also called by some as being "water."
17. There are many differences in the qualities of water that can be seen in semen, blood, saliva, urine, sweat and other fluids. Upon analysis, these different qualities can easily be seen.
18. The body consists mostly of water, and the earth, moon, and planets are comprised of various forms of water.
19. There is an ocean of salt, an ocean of milk, an ocean of wine, an ocean of ghee, an ocean of curds, an ocean of sugarcane juice, and an ocean of pure water.
20. Like this, water is spread out all over from the beginning to the end of creation. It appears at one place and disappears in another.
21. Water takes on the flavor of whatever it is mixed with. In the sugarcane it has an extremely lovely sweetness.
22. The body is held together with water and it requires additional water to survive. How much can be said about its origin and expanse?
23. Water can save one’s life, and water can kill. There are many types of pleasures that are enjoyed from the various forms of water. If we give thought to it, it can be seen that water is truly remarkable.
24. Water flows on the earth making various melodious sounds, and in great waterfalls it pours down with thundering force.
25. In many places there are reservoirs and huge lakes that get filled up to the brim with canals and streams flowing from them with great turbulence.
26. In many places rivers and streams flow underground that can be heard when they are running near the surface.
27. There are huge reservoirs full of water in the earth which no one has neither seen nor heard, and there are many streams that have begun flowing after lightening has struck the earth.
28. There is water hidden in many places underground, and many places where it is seen on the surface of the earth.
29. There is one river that flows through the three worlds, and there is water in clouds that rains down from the sky.
30. The root of earth is water, the root of water is fire (light), and the root of fire is wind. Like this, one element is greater than another.
31. Still greater than the elements is God. Understand, that even greater than God is Parabrahman, the Absolute Reality.
