In Praise of the Sun

1. Blessed is the race of kings descended from the Sun, which is the most special among ancestral successions. (Lord Rama was a descendant of this ancestry, the clan of Raghu.) The light of the Sun’s radiance has spread over the earth.
2. There is a fault with the body of the moon as it wanes for fifteen days of the month, but the radiance of the Sun never becomes diminished.
3. There is no simile that can be used as a comparison to the Sun by whose light all living beings enjoy the dawn.
4. In this world there are many duties and actions which can be categorized as best, medium, or lowly. Many easy and difficult activities continue happening regularly in nature.
5. Without the light of the Sun, the Vedas, Shastras, Puranas, mantras and yantras, as well as bathing and other rituals, all would remain unknown.
6. Innumerable opinions and yogic practices become known, and are followed in their own ways once the Sun has risen.
7. Many worldly and spiritual activities with their causes and effects are useless and cannot be achieved without the light of day.
8. The eyes are the organs of perception of the Sun’s light. Without the light of the Sun being visible to the eyes, one becomes blind to everything. Nothing can be seen to move without the Sun’s light.
9. It can be argued that a blind person can write poetry, but even that happens due to the effects of the Sun. If the mind of such a poet is cold and dull, how could there be any expansion of the intellect that is required for the writing of poetry?
10. The light of the Sun gives heat, while the light of the moon is cool. If there were no heat, the body would perish.
11. Without the energy of the Sun, no activity is possible. Dear wise listeners, find this out, and see for yourselves.
12. The incarnations of the gods like Shiva and Vishnu, and the many manifestations of Shiva and Shakti all came after the sun. The Sun existed prior to them all, and still continues to exist now.
13. All beings that have come into this world have lived under the Sun, and the end of their bodies happened in the presence of the Sun.
14. The moon has emerged out of the churning of the cosmic sea in recent times. It was one among the fourteen precious gems (important things), and is known as the brother of goddess Laxmi.
15. The sun is what gives the eye of vision to the world. This is known to all creatures large and small. For this reason the Sun is considered to be the greatest of the great.
16. The Sun unceasingly traverses its path in the sky. Day after day it comes and goes, serving all beings with the power of its heat.
17. If daylight were not there, all would be in darkness, and nobody would know what is superior and what is inferior. Without daylight thieves and the creatures of the night would rule the earth.
18. What else can be compared to the Sun? It is the most brilliant thing that we know without comparison.
19. Such is the Sun that is known to all, the ancestor of Lord Rama. Its greatness is so immense that it cannot be described by human speech.
20. The ancestry of Lord Rama from which many great kings have descended is very ancient. How can their greatness be comprehended by a person of dull intellect?
21. Where the devotees of Lord Rama gather, my mind becomes engrossed in His greatness. I have become speechless trying to describe His importance.
22. In salutation to the Sun, all of one's difficulties are cleared away. Merely by looking at the Sun, one's inspiration is enhanced.
