The Attributes of the Self

1. If we look at the Earth, we see that there is water found at many places, and there are many places where the land is dry.
2. Similarly, the visible creation is expansive, and in it, some beings are adorned with a greater awareness, and many appearances have remained inanimate without any awareness.
3. The ancient scriptures of spiritual science (Shastras) have described the four streams of living beings, the four speeches, and the 8.4 million species of creatures.
4. In the Shastras it is also mentioned that there are four hundred thousand types of human beings, two million types of wild animals, and one million one hundred thousand types of worms and insects.
5. Furthermore, the Shastras state that there are one million types of birds, nine hundred thousand types of aquatic animals, and three million types of stationary beings.
6. All together, this makes up eight million four hundred thousand species of living beings. All of these living beings have some degree of awareness within them. The actual numbers of such bodies that have taken form are cannot be counted.
7. Innumerable beings appear and disappear, and this universal appearance is the basic support for all of them. There is no other support for them other than this universal appearance.
8. Looking more subtly, we find the five elements. Some are manifest in a gross state and are visible, and some are simply known to be present.
9. The Inner-Self is recognized to be of the nature of motion. Now, please listen attentively to the explanation of the resting place of consciousness.
10. The living being, the jiva, is the knower of happiness and sorrow. Similarly, the "Pure Awareness," or Sada-Shiva is also the knower of happiness and sorrow. In both jiva and Shiva, the inner-mind (antahkarana) with its five aspects (inner-mind, mind, intellect, thinking, and ego), is present as a wondrous aspect of the Self.
11. In the sky, the gross qualities of desire, anger, fear, greed, enticement, and sorrow have become manifest. Understand that these, along with the three gunas are also attributes of the Self.
12. The many ways of thinking and discrimination, many firm determinations, the nine types of devotion, the four types of liberation, the state of detachment, and the effortless Natural State are also all qualities of the Self.
13. Being the Seer, the witness, the density of Knowledge, Power, Life-Energy, the most ancient, and the attributes of listening, reflecting, and explaining are all qualities of the Self.
14. The seen, the seer, and the act of seeing; the object of meditation, the mediator, and meditation, as well as the known, the knower, and knowledge, are all qualities of the Self.
15. The hidden meanings of the Vedas, the Shastras, the Puranas, and spiritual life, as well as omniscience and power are all qualities of the Self.
16. The one who feels bound, the seeker, the aspirant, and the accomplished one, as well as the investigation and the seeing of purity, Knowledge, and understanding, are all attributes of the Self.
17. The waking state, the dream state, the state of deep sleep, and the Turya state, as well as Prakriti-Purusha, the Primal Illusion, the body, and the eight bodies of the universe, are all attributes of the Self.
18. The Supreme Self (Paramatman), the Supreme Goddess (Parameshwari), the Universal Self, the "Lord of the Universe," as well as Shiva and Parvati are all attributes of the Self.
19. Whatever is subtle, as well as all that has name and form, is only the Self. There is no limit to the innumerable names that are used to indicate the Self.
20. Primordial Power, the Absolute with its power, the "Power of the Primal Illusion," the all-powerful, the genesis of the many substances in creation and their sustenance, are all attributes of the Self.
21. The primary premise of the Vedas, the final conclusion (siddhanta), many types of singing, the playing of musical instruments, and the various streams of knowledge are all marvelous attributes of the Self.
22. Knowledge, ignorance, and wrong-knowledge, as well as negative dispositions and positive dispositions, knowingness, pure Knowledge, and detachment from the world are all attributes of the Self.
23. Understanding of the body, the universe, the elements, as well as making decisions and clear thinking, are all attributes of the Self.
24. The many various types of meditation, as well as the contemplation on various states, situations, different types of knowledge, self-surrender, and the oneness of God are all attributes of the Self.
25. The three hundred and thirty million gods, the eighty-eight thousand sages, as well as countless animals and birds are all attributes of the Self.
26. The various forms of spirits, angels, and goddesses are all attributes of the Self.
27. The moon, the sun, the galaxies of stars, constellations, planetary systems, as well as the divine serpent and tortoise, and huge cloud formations are all attributes of the Self.
28. Gods, demons, human beings, many varieties of living beings, as well as the states of being and not being, are all attributes of the Self.
29. The Self has many attributes, but Brahman is changeless and without attributes. The main quality of the Self is to know, whether it is partial knowledge or complete Knowledge.
30. Through contemplation and the worship of the Inner-Self, one realizes the unseen Reality. There, there is no doubt, or any place for imagination.
