Discourse on Making Effort

1. In spiritual discourse and when giving explanations about God, the speaker should speak with great enthusiasm and be able to give clear examples so that there is nothing lacking in his explanations.
2. If the speaker makes mistakes in his explanations, those who are knowledgeable will recognize what he has done, but the ignorant people will merely continue to look on without gaining any understanding.
3. If the speaker hesitates when giving an answer to a question, the listeners will recognize this, and the speaker will begin to lose his credibility.
4. The speaker should be able to satisfy the listeners with short and direct answers. Even if some irritation arises in his mind, he must control himself. His speech should be such that everyone remains interested in what he has to say.
5. The speaker who cannot tolerate any disturbances from the listeners and becomes angry will lose the listener's interest in the discourse.
6. The speaker should examine from time to time who among the listeners are attentive and pleased with the discourse, and whose mind is distracted.
7. When a disciple begins doubting and his mind runs in the wrong direction, if the guru tries to argue with him, this will create doubts in the minds of everyone who sees the discourse going in the wrong direction.
8. If a spiritual leader is bound by expectations, he does not display signs of wisdom and endlessly engages in senseless arguments.
9. Such spiritual leaders are useless and get into trouble everywhere they go. How can anyone gain any satisfaction in the company of such a person?
10. A good speaker should be able to please the minds of the people everywhere. In this way, his fame will spread and he will be respected by people of all types of dispositions.
11. He should remain out of the world, and observe the congregation from a higher level of consciousness, not asking or demanding anything from anyone.
12. He should understand full well that the Lord of the Universe resides everywhere. Those who utilize the power of discrimination take care to remember this at all times.
13. If a speaker takes it for granted that everyone that he sees are entirely useless people, how can it be true that he is the only good person?
14. A spiritual leader should not go off to some barren land and separate himself from the people. He should not behave eccentrically, and he should maintain a humble demeanor in order to please people.
15. One who cannot live and behave well among people is of no use as a spiritual leader. The spiritual leader spends his time in discourse about spiritual knowledge, in doing spiritual practice, and in listening to aspirants.
16. For example, if one does not know how to swim oneself, why should he make others drown? Acting in such a manner, the interest and attraction towards spirituality becomes lost and listeners become doubtful.
17. A speaker should only present himself to others if he has studied and can impart proper knowledge. Otherwise, he should remain quiet. One should not present oneself as being knowledgeable if he is not.
18. How can someone who walks very slowly catch up with someone who walks quickly? One who wants to ride a fast horse should be capable and competent to do so.
19. The teaching of spiritual matters requires a great deal of effort which needs to be done by those with keen and sharp intellect. How can such work be done by the simple-minded who easily get carried away by their emotions and drowned by false beliefs?
20. Of what use is a speaker who gathers people together but cannot hold their attention or clear away their doubts? It is like one who sows a field but does not cultivate and harvest the crop, or a jeweller who collects gems but does not bring them to the market.
21. Spiritual meaning becomes evident when there is an increasing interest and attraction to spiritual life aroused within the listeners. Otherwise, people only get fed up with arguing and lose interest.
22. If what the speaker says is not acceptable to the people, then the listeners come to be regarded as not being acceptable by the speaker. If there is doubt in everyone's minds, how can anyone gain any satisfaction?
23. If the initiation into Knowledge is given to those who have no virtue, and if the people receiving the initiation are not sincere, how can there be any proper use of the power of discrimination? Where the lack of discrimination prevails, one should not remain in such a place of false teachings.
24. If one cannot take on the responsibility of making sure that things are done correctly, what is the point of organizing some undertaking? Even if one works hard for many days, all of the effort merely turns out to be wasted in the end.
25. To ensure that everything runs smoothly takes a lot of work, and if things do not turn out well, it creates a lot of dissent and anger among people from one moment to the next. There are so many obstacles to success, how many of them can be enumerated?
26. The foolish people get carried away in their foolishness, and the knowledgeable quarrel out of pride in their knowledge. In both ways, a ridiculous situation develops among the people.
27. What can be said about such people who cannot manage and control the entire affair, yet cannot remain quiet?
28. Such a person who is not capable of managing responsibilities should give up attachment to titles and honors, and instead put some effort into making his life worthwhile by travelling to some new places.
29. If one cannot travel to new places, nor can he tolerate dealing with other people, he will experience a great deal of suffering and doubt in life.
30. All of this depends upon one's own disposition. Each person must give careful consideration as to what is right for oneself. Consider what is most beneficial for yourself and act accordingly.
