Explanation of the Subtle

1. It is not acceptable to the inner-mind that one should worship an idol made of clay and try to immerse oneself in it.
2. The worship of God in the form of an image that can be thrown away is not deemed to be proper by living beings. This must be carefully considered and seen with the inner-mind.
3. It is not possible that God can be made, destroyed, or thrown away. Therefore, one must investigate into the nature of God and see for oneself.
4. God resides in many bodies and then after some time gives them up. One must recognize this God for oneself through the power of discrimination.
5. There are many spiritual practices and many explanations that are given so that aspirants may find God. Everything must be understood with one’s inner-mind.
6. The Knowledge of Brahman cannot be given to others without experiential understanding. It is not an object that can be given and taken away.
7. All people feel in their minds that they must meet God personally. However, the answer that lies in the utilization of the power of discrimination is something altogether different.
8. The mere thinking about an idea of God cannot be sustained. An idea about God is not God. However, people do not agree with this, and do not want to let go of their ideas about God. What to do?
9. When great people die, the common people make statues in their likeness and look to those statues with faith as if the person was still alive. This is the way of worship for most people.
10. If a person cannot succeed in a large business, he turns to a small business in order to make money. How can anyone acquire great wealth like that of a king with this kind of approach?
11. This is an example of simple and blind faith which is of the nature of ignorance. How can one realize the "God of gods" through ignorance?
12. Knowledge (Jnana) is not acceptable to the ignorant person, and for a knowledgeable person, speculation and imagination is not acceptable. Therefore, Knowledge must be gained through the indications of one who is accomplished.
13. Give up Illusion and go to the root. It is only in this way that one gains contentment, otherwise one gets carried away in the wrong direction.
14. There are many ways to cross beyond Illusion and realize God. The path of listening to spiritual knowledge must be followed in order to gain actual experience.
15. By not following this way, worldly people go astray and miss recognizing God. Therefore, the aspirant must recognize the correct and incorrect types of spiritual practice.
16. Do not follow the path of falsehood, avoid the company of people who say false things, and do not accumulate false beliefs of any kind.
17. Whatever is false, will always be false. The false cannot survive in the light of the True. The tendency of the mind to flow downwards towards the objects of the world must be reversed and one's attention must be turned towards Parabrahman.
18. Continue to listen to spiritual discourses and everything can be understood. Listening clears away many types of confusion and entanglement.
19. Just as a tangled thread is disentangled by untying its knots, in the same way, the mind should be unravelled step by step by turning it towards its root.
20. Everything in creation is all mixed together. All of creation is formed from the unified mixture of the elements and gunas, and the same is true for the body.
21. Whatever one wants to see should be looked at and discovered at the level of the body. The meaning of the fourteen names of Brahman must be understood from the level of the body.
22. That which is changeless and without any attributes pervades all places. One must discover that this untainted Reality permeates the body in the same way.
23. The Primal Illusion is in the form of desire. This is the true nature of the inner-mind. It is ignited in the form of Life-Energy which is also present in the body.
24. The state where the gunas are in equilibrium is called "the equilibrium of the gunas," or Gunasamya. This is a subtle principle which is not easy to comprehend. Those sages who understand the subtle are worthy to be praised by everyone.
25. The body appears to have two sides, the left and the right. Similarly, the half-male and half-female principle should be recognized in the body.
26. Understand what Purusha-Prakriti is, and recognize the homogenous mixture that is called God with six qualities.
27. This is called the "Principle Element" wherein lies the hidden three gunas. The half crescent mark of the OM symbol () represents this Pure Sattva quality, which is the origin of the stirring of the three gunas.
28. The body functions because of the three gunas, this can be directly perceived. Understand that the mixture of all the qualities that has just now been explained is what is called the field of the body.
29. Mind, Illusion, and the living being (jiva) are also naturally in the field of the body. The meaning of the fourteen names of Brahman must be seen from the level of the body.
30. When the body falls dead, everything disappears, but Parabrahman, the Absolute Reality remains. Knowing that Parabrahman is eternal, hold steadfastly to it.
