The Teaching

1. First, one must act according to the situation. One's activities must be carried out correctly. If there is some shortcoming, then an unpleasant situation will occur.
2. Therefore, proceed with activities that have been started. Some will work out well, and sometimes difficulties will arise. No matter what may happen, remember God, Lord Vishnu.
3. Naturally, the question arises, "What is this God Vishnu?" One should give some thought to this question and see for oneself. It is said that before performing religious rituals one should remember the twenty-four names of God.
4. He has twenty-four names, he has a thousand names, he has an endless number of names, and yet he is nameless. One must recognize within how he is, by utilizing the power of discrimination.
5. A brahmin priest worships God in the form of an idol after having his bath and performing his prayer ritual.
6. People worship many gods, and many idols and images with love, but what is the image of Paramatman, the Supreme Self? What is He?
7. One must first recognize God, and then worship him, much like how an officer or master is honored after recognizing his status.
8. In the same way, properly recognize that the Supreme Self is God through inquiry and deep thinking. Only then can one cross beyond the sea of Illusion.
9. Idols and images are worshipped, but it is in the body that the Inner-Self is awakened. It is the appearance of the body that comes and goes that is the abode of the incarnations of God.
10. However, those incarnations always remain in their true form which is of the nature of Universal Light. This is called the Sattva Guna, the quality of purity that is the brilliance of Knowledge (Consciousness).
11. Within the brilliance of that Consciousness, there exist countless gods. This can be seen and verified in one's own experience.
12. God (Isha) resides in the town (Pura) of the body and is therefore called Purusha, or Beingness. In the same way, God resides in the universe and should be recognized as the Lord of the Universe.
13. In the universe, he is in the form of Consciousness residing and functioning within all bodies. Recognize Lord Vishnu as the inner-mind of all in this way.
14. Lord Vishnu exists within the universe as well as within all living beings. He is the doer as well as the experiencer of all activity. The wise recognize him as the Inner-Self.
15. It is he who listens, sees, smells, tastes, understands, and inquires. It is he who recognizes everything, and who is able to identify friends and strangers.
16. The Inner-Self of the entire universe is only one, but because of holding on to pride for the body, the bodily identification creates a hindrance that is the habit of thinking oneself to be a separate individual,.
17. It is he that is born, grows, dies, and kills, like waves that arise and fall one after another in an ever-changing sea that is the appearance and dissolution of the three worlds.
18. It is he alone who exists and directs the three worlds. Therefore, he is called the "Lord of the Three Worlds." This must be seen and experienced for oneself using the power of discrimination.
19. The Inner-Self is described as being like this, and he also exists within the five elements. Moreover, deep consideration must be given to the four Great Statements (Mahavakyas) from the Vedas.
20. First, see the one who occupies the body, then see the one who resides in the universe. Having realized that, afterwards, the Absolute Reality, can be attained.
21. Having given deep thought to Parabrahman, one can determine what is Essence and what is non-essence, and one becomes unmistakably convinced that all that is moving is destined to disappear.
22. Understand that all that has a creation, existence, and destruction is not the same as the untainted Reality. It is here that Knowledge (Jnana) turns into Supreme Knowledge (Vijnana).
23. The eight bodies appearing in time and space and should be understood and thrown off. What remains is pure untainted Brahman.
24. With thorough investigation and deep thought one becomes singularly unified with Brahman without the experience of any separate observer. See that this is also a state which must be dissolved, and become stateless.
25. Here, what remains is not possible to be indicated with words. The indication as well as that which is being indicated are given up and any remnant of any state disappears.
