The Four Substances

1. From here to the end of the exposition, there are four principle elements to keep in the mind. First is Parabrahman, the second is the fourteen aspects of the Primal Illusion (the fourteen Brahmans), the third is the five elements, and the fourth is the four streams of living species.
2. Parabrahman, the Absolute Reality, is entirely of a nature different from everything. The Absolute is distinct from everything else. It is free of any kind of imaginings.
3. The nature of Parabrahman is beyond any conceptualization. It is pure, unmoving, changeless, and continuous.
4. Nothing can be compared with Parabrahman. It is the one principle substance. The second substance is the Primal Illusion (Moolamaya) which consists of many concepts and imaginings.
5. The Primal Illusion occurs in a very subtle form. It is in the form of one homogeneous subtle mixture. The original inspiration of "I Am" that took place in Parabrahman is what is called the Primal Illusion.
6. The Primal Illusion is the original desire of God, which is the Inner-Self of all that is Lord Rama (AtmaRama). There are many names and indications that are given to describe its nature.
7. In the unmoving Reality, movement came to life. Therefore, it is called Life-Energy, or Chaitanya. From that Life-Energy came the three gunas in a subtle state of equilibrium, and thus, the three attributes became established in a state of equal balance. This state of equilibrium of the gunas is called "Gunasamya."
8. The Primal Illusion is God who is sometimes called the half-male and half-female principle, God with six qualities, and Prakriti-Purusha. It is also called Shiva-Shakti.
9. It is initially in the form of "Pure Sattva" that is indicated by the crescent mark on the OM symbol () which represents the initial stirring of the three gunas (Gunakshobhini). Afterwards, the activity of the three gunas being distinct from each other became apparent.
10. Mind, Illusion, and the Inner-Self are also names given to it. All of this is called the fourteen names of the Primal Illusion. It is of the nature of Self-Knowledge which exists everywhere.
11. Like this, is the second substance, which is given fourteen names. The third substance is the five elements.
12. Here, with the five elements, the principle of Awareness is less predominant. From the beginning to the end of creation the five elements are evident. The fourth substance, which has been explained previously, is the four streams of living species.
13. The four types of living species which are endless in number have proliferated everywhere on the earth, each with its own type of awareness. At this point in the exposition, all of the four substances have been named.
14. When only a small quantity of seeds are sown, a large crop arises from them. Similarly, the same thing has happened with the Self. From the one Self, the four streams of living beings and the four types of speech have arisen.
15. Like this, the Power has expanded. It was subtle and singular in the beginning, but then proliferated in many forms. In the form of a human being it enjoys creation in many ways.
16. An animal kills another living being and then moves on. Its understanding of life is limited to the functions related to survival. With the human body, the Self is able to enjoy a great many things.
17. There are many special words and sounds, many different special sensations of touch, many special forms, many special tastes, and many special fragrances. The special qualities of these various objects of the senses can only be understood with the human body.
18. There are many precious gems, various types of clothing, different types of vehicles, and various streams of knowledge, art, and science, that are only appreciated with the human body.
19. The Power of the Self fills all places and controls all things, but it is only through the human body that the many streams of knowledge, the arts, and various ideas and concepts are comprehended.
20. Through the human body, it is possible to see the visible world, to protect one’s status and honor, and to utilize the power of discrimination.
21. With the human body, it is possible to think about the worldly life and the spiritual life, as well as exercise various types of discernment and lack of discernment.
22. Only with a human body is it possible to understand the structure of the universe, the nature of the Primal Illusion, and various abstract ideas and concepts.
23. Only human beings can enjoy the eight types of pleasures, the nine types of emotions, the many types of recreation, and the essential hidden meaning which lies behind the apparent meaning of words.
24. The human being has control over other living beings, and the human being is protected by God. This can only be understood fully because of the human body.
25. The human body is extremely difficult to obtain, and with it comes many rare benefits. What is difficult is made easy with the human body.
26. All of the other bodies of living beings only lead a life of mundane existence and toil, but the human body is a great treasure. However, to understand its value one must utilize the power of discrimination.
27. One who is lazy and neglects the capacity for discrimination becomes ruined in all respects. One cannot recognize God without utilizing the power of discrimination.
28. The human being is himself Lord Narayana. This realization comes by listening and with continuous meditation of the inner-mind.
29. One who knows how to swim does not require any support. Such a person can independently investigate and find out anything and everything.
30. After having investigated everything, one remains free of doubt. Thereafter, his own state is known only to himself.
