The Inner-Self

1. First we must pay respect to the doer of all, the one who is the supporter of all the gods. His praises must be sung first.
2. No activities can happen without him. Even a fallen leaf cannot move. All of the three worlds move because of him.
3. It is the Inner-Self (Antaratman) that is the Self of all. He is the Self of the gods, demons and human beings. He is the origin of the four streams of beings, and the four types of speech.
4. It is He alone who resides in all beings and conducts their lives in various ways according to circumstances. How many of his activities in creation can be told?
5. Such is the one who is the hidden God. He is called God, or Ishwara. It is because of him that people can revel in the greatest of glories.
6. One who recognizes God becomes that "Universal God" oneself. Being God oneself, who is there to care about absorption in the state of samadhi, or the effortless sahaja state?
7. Only when analyzing the entire expanse of the three worlds (waking, dreaming, and deep sleep) will the secret become known, and will the great windfall of Knowledge be gained suddenly without any strenuous efforts.
8. Who has really seen and analyzed the Inner-Self like this? Many see and understand only a little of him, and with that little knowledge remain satisfied.
9. Oh listener! Whatever has been seen must be seen again and again. Hear the same explanations again and again. Read what has already been read again and again.
10. However much one sees of the Inner-Self is according to the condition of the one who sees. One can only tell what has been seen and observed according to the extent of one's utilization of the power of discrimination.
11. Much has been observed and seen of the Inner-Self but that is not sufficient to be able to describe him. What capacity does a small embodied being have to understand him?
12. That which is complete in itself cannot be understood by the limited individual if the analysis has not been continuous and uninterrupted. Only by continuous analysis and reflection on the explanations will one remain completely non-separate from God.
13. Only one who is not separate from God can be called a devotee. Otherwise, one is only tiring oneself with unnecessary efforts.
14. It is like visiting a house without meeting its owner, or like going to some kingdom without meeting the king.
15. It's a great wonder that human beings enjoy sensual pleasures and show off with the body, but they miss knowing who it is that sustains the body.
16. Like this, people don't use discrimination even though they say that they do. But this is alright, as people do according to their capacity.
17. The foolish don’t know how to control the mind. Therefore, be wise. Know however, that even some who have become wise have also experienced downfall.
18. Just like a person who has forgotten a treasure that is being kept within the house goes searching for it from door to door outside, the same thing happens to the ignorant person who does not understand God.
19. What worldly person is able to meditate on God? When the attention is directed to the visible world delightfully, how will one come to know God?
20. Innumerable beings in various forms and with various types of speech have proliferated throughout the universe. They can even be found living in the earth and in stones.
21. The Inner-Self pervades all places and assumes many forms. He is One among many. He is both hidden and revealed in many places.
22. The moving can never become the one that is unmoving. This can only be understood in one's actual experience. The ever-changing Illusion cannot become the changeless Absolute Reality.
23. When the elements are dissolved one into another, body-consciousness falls away, and the pure untainted all-pervading stillness is as it is.
24. To find out who one is, and from where and how one has come to be, is the path of discrimination. One who does not have a keen intellect will not understand.
25. The wise will utilize the power of discrimination and cross the difficulties of worldly life. With devotion to God, all of one's family is uplifted.
